2018 in Music: A Collection of Photos

This year has been a year of new adventures. I’ve been doing a little less music photography, but has managed to travel a lot, visiting new and old places. Ibiza, New York, Iceland. New festivals with and without my camera bag; Panorama NYC, Roskilde Festival, Øyafestivalen, Iceland Airwaves. Enjoying life and working hard.

I started 2018 with a wonderful and intimate Charlotte Dos Santos show at Victoria Nasjonal Jazzscene in Oslo and ended it with a really poor concert by Ms. Lauryn Hill at Oslo Spektrum. In between I’ve photographed artists like Sigrid, Grandmaster Flash, Gary Numan, Harry Styles, Thirty Seconds To Mars, Metallica, Demi Lovato, Foo Fighters, Father John Misty, Prophets Of Rage, Arcade Fire, St. Vincent, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Roger Waters, Jeff Lynne, Laurie Anderson, Shania Twain, Blood Orange and MGMT. Not bad!

I sincerly hope you enjoy this collection of pictures from 2018 (click on the image for full screen).

Iceland Airwaves 2018

Last week I travelled to Iceland to cover the festival Iceland Airwaves for GAFFA Norge. My article (in Norwegian) is published here, but I also had loads og pictures that I could not fit in the article so I wanted to share some of my favorite shots from the festival and Iceland in this blog post.

This was my first visit to Iceland so I’m really happy that I also had the chance to visit Secret Lagoon, Geysir and Gullfoss on this trip too. In addition to the Reykjavík Photographic Museum and the Icelandic Phallological Museum(!).

The musical highlights of this year’s Iceland Airwaves, for me, were Reikjavíkurdætur, Ólafur Arnalds, AURORA, Natalie Prass and Blood Orange. I was most disappointed with Snail Mail (great music, but not a very good show) and Julian Casablancas & The Voidz (Casablancas being a big hero for me on account of growing up with The Strokes, but his new project is really not that interesting and the show was a mess).

Festival Memories

The summer is almost here! And although I won't be working as a photographer at a lot of festivals this summer, compared to previous years (only Oslo Sommertid, Piknik I Parken and Øyafestivalen in Oslo + Panorama Festival in New York (without my camera)), this is a good time to look back at some of my favorite festival memories from 2011 to 2017.

Some of the highlights include Lana Del Rey at Hovefestivalen in Arendal, Arctic Monkeys at Roskilde Festival in Roskilde, Kendrick Lamar at Øyafestivalen in Oslo, The Libertines at Lollapalooza Berlin, Patti Smith at Bergenfest in Bergen and Radiohead at Primavera Sound in Barcelona.

I've also included some backstage portraits and audience shots in this post.

2017 in Music: A Collection of Photos

At the end of last year I tried to pick out the best pictures of my archive, and the blog post is currently the most popular on this site. So, why not try again this year? In 2016 I worked at more than 120 concerts (including festivals) so I've tried to do (a little) less concert photography this year. To make for a more interesting post (I hope) this time around, I've also included some portratis with artists such as Ed Sheeran, Laurie Anderson, Susanne Sundfør and Joey Santiago.

2017 has been a good year for music in general and I've been lucky enough to shoot pictures of such iconic artists and bands like Green Day, Conor Oberst, KISS, Solange, George Clinton, Lana Del Rey, Pixies, Alice Cooper and The Jesus and Mary Chain. But I've also had the chance to check out a bunch of new acts at Oslo's more intimate concert stages and at festivals like Eurosonic Noorderslag, Trondheim Calling and by:Larm during the winter, and at Bergenfest, Piknik I Parken and Øyafestivalen during the summer.

This year I've also had the pleasure of getting my first double-page spreads in the two largest newspapers in Norway with my portraits of Ed Sheeran being featured in VG and my interview with Sheeran (and my photos) being published in Dagbladet. My picture of AURORA from Bergenfest was also featured in a big article in VG later in the year. And in addition to that a picture of Terje Rypdal was published in The Guardian, while one of the best shots from Alice Cooper's show at Sentrum Scene in Oslo was featured in Rolling Stone along with a big interview with the veteran rocker.

As Pete Doherty's concert in Oslo this week was cancelled a couple of hours ago, it looks like I've shot my last concert of 2017 (and what a great way to end the year with Anna of The North at Parkteatret in Oslo earlier this month). But I've already started to fill up my calendar for 2018, and it looks like it is going to be a good year.

I sincerly hope you enjoy this collection of pictures from 2017 (click on the image for full screen).

Bergenfest 2017

Last week was spent at Bergenfest in Bergen - a particularly rainy festival indeed.

Bad weather, good music: Check out my photos of Richard Ashcroft (The Verve), Liam Gallagher (Oasis), Sigrid, 9 Grader Nord, Ellie Goulding, Tove Lo, Zara Larsson, Benjamin Clementine, Bryan Ferry, AURORA and Halsey performing at the festival here.
